Week 1: Early Mornings- Half-time Catch-up

When I started this week of trying to be a morning person, I was enthusiastic. I, very foolishly, decided to set my morning alarm for 7:00am. That’s more than three hours earlier than my usual waking up time.
I had been having very frequent episodes of insomnia the last couple of months. I would lie tossing and turning and then finally giving up on sleep. That happened the night before day 1 too.


So, of course you must’ve figured out my level of failure on the first morning.

Day 1
Failed miserably. Couldn’t sleep till 4:30am. No way in the world was I waking up at 7am. I still tried to salvage my situation by changing the time of alarm to 9am, telling myself that technically I’m still sticking to my plan of waking up “before 10am”.

I’m sure that the alarm rang at 9am. I’m also sure that my husband switched it off and made sure that I don’t wake up until he does.

So, I failed on day one and woke up at 11:30am.

Day 2
I got real and set the alarm for 8am. I also read up a lot on the science of sleep and found out that our sleep cycle typically last 90 minutes, so in order to have a well-rested sleep, we must sleep for hours that are multiples of 90 minutes- 4.5 hours, 6 hours, 7.5 hours or 9 hours. Science seems to back it up and I was convinced enough to try it. With 7 and a half hours in mind, I tried sleeping at 12:30am.

Much to my surprise, I woke up feeling less groggy. Most mornings I feel like a zombie, feeling tired as soon as I’m out of bed, like I’m drunk on sleep. But today, I was fairly functional.

Of course, I spent a while lazing around and checking my phone instead of being productive but hey, atleast I was awake, and that’s the whole point.

I am quite ready to test this 7.5 hours sleep cycle theory again.


Day 3
It worked! Once again, I woke up feeling so much better than I always do. My husband woke up with me too. This week is turning out to be great.

I made breakfast for us. Usually, our “breakfast” is just coffee and then lunch and hour or so later. Not today though. We had eggs and garlic bread with our coffee. It felt like an achievement, especially at the end of the day when I realized that I haven’t had three whole meals in months!


Quite tired and looking forward to sleeping at the end of the day, which is 12:30am now by the way.

Day 4
Another good morning followed by some work around the house and breakfast. Our flat is getting painted today so even though I am slightly tired in the afternoon, I cant take a nap. Also got some writing work done in the morning and found this to be another benefit of waking up early. If you start early, you finish early and then you have the rest of the day to yourself. No work left for the evenings, so maybe I’ll go out, maybe I’ll try a new recipe or maybe I’ll go shopping, who knows? Haha


Clearly, I’m just happy that I’m not home bound on work days, which is usually the case when I work in the evenings/nights.

Hopefully, I keep this up all week (and maybe even longer *fingers crossed*).
